CHILDREN TODAY ARE ADRIFT IN A METAPHOR OF CAMP OF THE SAINTS AND LOST WITHIN THE VIRTUAL CULTURE ...
Hero's used to be easy to find and emulate as a youngster in America. But as a child, I don't ever recall hero's being lost. I believe hero-worship or seeking similar only happens when a void occurs in a child's life. I can remember during my childhood (i.e., before T.V.) hero's were all about us. The police officer on the beat, the priest at the corner church, even our teachers at school, each a part of the national cultural fabric. To all, we looked up and paid careful attention to what was said and sometimes we didn't ... and cringed at the words, "I'm going to tell your father when he gets home!" Discipline a fundamental aspect of a kid's life.
Today kids have a host of specialists all purported to be essential for their well being and proper development. Children now have lawyers, child psychologists, family therapists, and many other specialists. A child today experience their childhood interrupted by interruptions of skilled childhood development professionals and other quasi-authoritarian adults (nonparent) defining and directing what their future should be for them.
Affirmative Parenting ... being held accountable for their behavior is really the foundation upon which self-esteem is nurtured. Children are really authoritarian opportunists if left to their own devices today the school feeds them breakfast and lunch, my question is when will the school start to do their laundry?
