Shock at the condition of the Israeli hostages Ohad Ben Ami, Or Levy, and Eli Sharabi, who were released from Hamas captivity on February 8, 2025, was expressed not only by Israelis but also by liberal Arab journalists and writers. They strongly condemned Hamas for starving the hostages, who were captured in the October 7, 2023 attack, and compared their treatment to the treatment of Jews at the hands of the Nazi regime.

Some of the writers criticized the cynical show staged by Hamas upon releasing the hostages and commented that the organization's operatives did not look like people who had suffered a "genocide" or "starvation" in Gaza. One writer also directed his criticism at the Red Cross, stating that those who collaborated with the Nazis by turning a blind eye to the condition of the Jews in the concentration camps are now cooperating with Hamas.
